Rhyparochromus vulgaris

This species is native to the Old World (Africa, Europe, and Asia), and only recently (2001) arrived in North America.

The adults overwinter and are very common in early spring.

These bugs are one of the first insects in the yard this year (2022). They are especially abundant at the base of the southern birch stump, and have been since mid-March.
