On the earliest days of spring, these Darwin Wasps are common in the yard - flitting about an just above the ground, rarely stopping long enough for a photo. The earliest that I've seen them is April 7 and the latest is May 3rd.

The first ones I've seen this spring. There were quite a few flying just above the ground in the backyard raspberry patch.
I netted one, cooled it down, took some (bad) photos, and released it.

Length ~ 20 mm
Mating pair observed in garden for a few minutes. Then they flew off onto the car. Then back to the garden where I lost track of them. BugGuide ID
